When Sixtus and his rival Karim Filali both qualify for the Candidates Tournament, Sixtus resolves to finally defeat him and show that preparation and study make the player, not intuition and a casual air.

Brakeville, Michigan has fallen on hard times. Restaurants dominate downtown with little to no economic diversity. Councilwoman Freya Applebaum decides to introduce a morale booster over the holidays by embracing Brakeville's German roots with a Pickle Hunt. Instead of children searching for a pickle on their Christmas trees at home, Freya will hide it somewhere in town and the older students will search the town for it.

Asher Lansbury, the new kid in town, has recently lost his Christmas-loving mother. He constantly sees her spirit, too far to make contact, but beckoning him toward Christmas spirit. A new relationship with Otto Applebaum leads to a Pickle Hunt to remember.

In the near future humanity evolves, developing poisons unique to each persons' body. Some of these poisons kill, some paralyze, some produce party drug-like effects. Instant chaos reigns as people mistakenly poison each other, causing mass delirium and deaths. The newly created US Department of Poison Control seizes control and attempts to reunify the country. However, small pockets within cities and larger swaths in rural areas remain under the control of charismatic leaders promising lives of plenty.
When a skittish young man appears in Herod's nightclub and various poison effects are neutralized, Herod realizes that with this man's Panacea he could corner the market on pain, pleasure, and profit. The trouble is, the US Department of Poison Control wants him back.

Welcome to Supermarket Stakes (sponsored by Interstate Instruments), the game show of ingenuity, skill, and speed. At the beginning of each round, each challenger is assigned an ingredient. They are then released into the supermarket for a set amount of time to gather the ingredients they need to make a dish.
